Try to make out the expressionless man’s face from the vantage point. The sunset is beautiful from here, too. There are two great strolls not far away. Hikers can be seen on Little Stony Man, a rocky outcropping, and at the top of Stony Man.

40.5 Thorofare Mountain Viewpoint

Enjoy the stunning westward panorama from Thorofare Mountain Overlook, located between the two Stony Man trails. One of the most well-known and difficult trails in the park, Old Rag Mountain, is visible all the way to its rocky spine and peak.

There’s also a longer and less strenuous trail (1.6 miles) to the top of Stony Man, which offers comparable vistas. As the highest point in the park, Stony Man attracts hikers of all ages. The trail is flat and only gains 360 feet in altitude. The trailhead for the Stony Man may be found very close to Skyland’s northern gate.

Hiking-Focused Itinerary for A Day Trip to Shenandoah National Park
